The Significance of Christmas Music

Christmas music is made up of different genres. Christmas music may be purely instrumental or, in the case of carols or songs, may use lyrics that cover subject matter such as: the nativity; gift giving, being merry and joyful; Santa Claus; reindeer; food and drink associated with the Christmas season.

It is quite customary to see music being performed in public at Christmas time. The music that we often listen to at Christmas will be performed by singers who sing carols on city streets (normally positioned close to a Christmas market); Christmas songs may also be heard in church in the form of hymns (some people like to attend a church service on Christmas Eve where hymns are sung to rejoice Jesus Christ and the birth of Jesus).

In Britain, we love to sing songs at Christmas and you will hear Christmas songs in the shops from November right through until the end of December. You will also hear Christmas songs on the radio in December. On Christmas Day itself, a tradition is to listen to Christmas songs whilst eating Christmas dinner and / or whilst opening Christmas presents.

Each year a Christmas carol service is recorded for television from King’s College Cambridge. The ‘Carols from King’s’ service is televised on Christmas Eve.

Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town

‘Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town’ is a Christmas song written by John Frederick Hoots and Haven Gillespie – it was first sung in November 1934. ‘Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town’ is a song that most British people are familiar with – it is a song that is aimed at children and references the customs associated with Christmas.

In the song, there is a reference to Santa Claus ‘making a list’ – this is the naughty and nice list. In folklore, we learn that Santa knows about how all of the children in the world have behaved:

He’s making a list

He’s checking it twice

He’s gonna find out who’s naughty or nice…

He knows if you’ve been bad or good

So be good for goodness sake

Folklore tells us that if children have behaved well, they will receive gifts from Santa because they are on the ‘nice’ list. However, if children have been badly behaved, they will appear on the ‘naughty’ list, so not receive a visit from Santa.

In this mini drama, Santa ticks off the naughty and nice children from his naughty/nice list. His elf assists him – we tell children that elves are Santa’s helpers and that they work for him in the North Pole, assisting Santa make and prepare gifts in Santa’s workshop. In the trailer, when we see teachers with the halo, this is to represent the nice children. When we see Patrick with horns, this introduces a humorous element to show that he is a naughty child.

Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree

This is the song that plays whilst teachers are decorating the Christmas tree. ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’ was originally recorded in 1958 and has since been recorded by many other artists. By the song’s 50th anniversary in 2008, the original version had sold over 25,000,000 copies. Christmas trees are a keystone to Christmas celebrations and decorations – many families like to decorate their Christmas tree together. Even the royal family decorate their Christmas tree; the royal family meet up on Christmas Eve to decorate the tree at the Queen’s Sandringham Estate home.

Christmas Dinner

Christmas dinner is perhaps the most significant part of Christmas Day – this normally tends to take place during the afternoon of Christmas Day. When the teachers sit at the table in the trailer, this is to show preparations that might occur before a Christmas meal. Food that is eaten during Christmas dinner is typically turkey with roast potatoes and vegetables (including Brussels sprouts). For dessert, people may eat Christmas cake. Christmas dinner may last for a couple of hours because there may be three or four courses.

Traditions at Christmas Dinner

In the mini drama, teachers sit around a table and pull crackers. Christmas crackers are a traditional Christmas favourite in the UK. They were first made in about 1845-1850 by a London sweet maker called Tom Smith. He had seen the French ‘bon bon’ sweets (almonds wrapped in pretty paper) on a visit to Paris in 1840. He came back to London and tried selling sweets like that in England and these also included a small motto or riddle in with the sweet; they did not sell very well.

Legend says that, one night, while he was sitting in front of his log fire, he became very interested by the sparks and cracks coming from the fire. Suddenly, he thought what a fun idea it would be if his sweets and toys could be opened with a crack when their fancy wrappers were pulled in half.

In 1861 Tom Smith launched his new range of what he called 'Bangs of Expectation'! It's thought that he bought the recipe for the small cracks and bangs in crackers from a fireworks company called Brock’s Fireworks. Today, crackers also contain Christmas hats which people like to wear during Christmas dinner.

Gift Giving

In the mini drama, Santa gives out presents to the teachers. In homes around Britain, people receive gifts from family and friends on Christmas Day, which they tend to open before or after Christmas dinner. Most families sit near the Christmas tree where they share and open their presents.
