A Young Apple Tree
A poor farmer had a friend who was famous for wonderful apple trees.
One day, the farmer's friend gave him a young apple tree.
The farmer was pleasant with the gift. When he came back home, he didn't know where to plant the tree.
He worried that if he plant the tree near the road, strangers would steal the apples. If he planted the tree in his field, his neighbours would steal the apples at night. If he planted the tree near his house, his children would pick apples.
In the end, he planted the tree in the woods where nobody could see it. But without sunlight, the tree died soon.
Later, the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place. " What's the difference?" the farmer said angrily. "If I had planted the tree near the road, strangers would steal the apples. If I had planted the in my field, my neighbours would steal the apples at night. If I had planted the tree near my house, my children would pick the apples."
"Yes," said his friend, "but at least someone would share the fruit. now you not only have robbed everyone of the fruit, but also destroyed a good apple tree!"
